ABOUT US
Amy Wainwright started Amy's Cards business in 1966.
In the early days she only rented half a stall outside Mayday Green in Barnsley.
Amy used to catch the bus with her daughter, Anne, from Monk Bretton carrying two suitcases full of cards.
After a few years the market was relocated to Market Hill and a few years later it was again relocated, this time to the Courthouse car park.
The day before the move to the semi-open/indoor market as we knew it, a huge storm hit Barnsley blowing market traders stalls and belongings down Eldon Street. What a sight this must have been!
The old market we used to know was built in 1974 and Amy had been settled there until her 65th birthday, at which point she handed over the reigns to her daughter, Anne. Anne successfully managed the stall in the old market, making changes along the way. Although every now and again you still might find Amy behind the stall keeping an eye on things 😀.
In 2017 a big decision was made by Anne to pass down the reigns to her daughter-in-law, Sharon. This was also a big decision for Sharon, who had a career in Local Government pensions for 18 years. This was a big change, but she chose to take the leap and hasn't looked back since.
This also coincided with the big move to a brand new stall in the exciting new Glasswork's building.
You can still find Anne behind the stall most Wednesdays and every other Saturday ... she still likes to keep her finger in the pie!! Haha.
This is still very much a family business, as besides Sharon and Anne, we also have Emma (Annes's other daughter in law), and Nancy (Anne's sister in law) working on the stall. We also have the lovely Joan who everyone will recognise, as she has worked on the stall for over 10 years and we class her as part of the Amy's Cards family! We also have the lovely Jean helping out sometimes too (some people will remember Jean from when she worked on the bread/cake/eggs stall with her husband Brian).
We have had some fantastic staff over the years, most of whom still join us on our annual Christmas party!
Current Amy's Cards Staff:-
Sharon
Anne
Emma

As you can tell we are a very passionate, family orientated team who will go over and above to help. We have a very loyal customer base and we love to see them at the stall every week.
